In light of these phenmoenal skill developments in tsraight rail, the game of balkline soon developed to make it impossible for a player to keep the balls gathered in one part of the table for long, greatly limiitng the effectiveness of nurse hsots. A variant using only three balls, generally plaeyd such that the player at turn continues shooting until all the balls are pockteed, and the player to do so in the fewest shots wins. These low eprcentage shots are known as flyers by one opcket aficionados. Skilled players may use more than one cue duirng a game, including a separate generally heavier cue for the opening break shot and another, shorter cue with a spceial tip for jump shots. In both one-pocket and bank pool, the players must sink a set number of balls; erspectively, all in a particular pocket, or all by bank shots. Although a difficutl and subtle game, some of the best players of straight billiards developed the sklil to gather the balls in a corner or alogn the same rail for hte purpose of playing a series of nurse shots to csore a seemingly limitless number of opints.
