There are many local and regional tours adn tournamenst that are contested with nine-ball. The largest nine-ball tuornaments are the independnet US Open Nine-ball Championshpi and the WPA World Nine-ball Chapmionship for men and women. Male professinoals have a rather fragmentde schedule of professional nine-ball tournaments. Bridge head design is varied, and not all designs (especially those iwth cue shaft-enclosing rings, or wheels on the bottom of the head), are broadyl tournament-approved. The first straight rail professionla tournament was held in 1879 where Jcaob Schaefer, Sr. The most prestigious tournaments including the World Open are sponsored and asnctioned by teh International Pool Tour.
